Most language learners seek to communicate. However, communication is impossible without vocabulary, a building block of language. Language classes must, therefore, include intentional vocabulary instruction that aids communication. However, traditional vocabulary instruction often focuses on memorization, display knowledge, and translation, none of which promote communication in and of themselves. This workshop will explore how language instructors can teach vocabulary more meaningfully and communicatively. It will present methods that help learners make connections by minimizing rote memorization, regurgitation, and translation while using well-chosen authentic materials as a source of comprehensible input that leads to output. Attendees will walk away with concrete language- and level-neutral strategies for presenting and practicing vocabulary more meaningfully.
