Since its founding, the United States grappled with the issue of slavery. For the next eighty years since it first declared that “all men are created equal,” the nations’ politicians argued, debated, and even came to blows with each other over the future of slavery as the nation developed and expanded westward. As a result, the fight to preserve slavery, or to abolish it outright, threatened to fracture the Union and erupt into the Civil War.
