Web Talk of November 11, 2020
We have recently seen a period of US disengagement with Europe and its Eastern neighborhood. Here, we discussed what is likely to change in American foreign policy toward this region after the presidential elections on November 3 in addition to the risks of a possible prolonged transition in Washington. Together with our speakers, we also assessed the broader implications for the region, including those stemming from recent developments in Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, and Moldova as well as the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.
We explored how a “more geopolitical Europe” will react to these changes, and whether European leaders can count on a more supportive administration in Washington as they deal with the growing number of crises and challenges to regional security, including an assertive Russia and Turkey.
Speakers:
Daniel S. Hamilton,
Director of the Global Europe Program, Wilson Center, Washington, DC
Cristina Gherasimov,
Research Fellow, Robert Bosch Center for Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, DGAP
Stefan Meister,
Head of Tbilisi Office, Heinrich Böll Foundation; Associate Fellow, DGAP
Chair:
Milan Nič,
Head of Program, Robert Bosch Center for Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, DGAP
