Benfica star Darwin Nunez breaks silence on his future amid Manchester United transfer links

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez is remaining coy on his future amid ongoing links connecting him with a move to Manchester United.

The striker, who added another goal to his growing collection during Benfica's 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday evening, has been closely linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, as United look to prioritise the addition of a younger striker this summer. Arsenal and Liverpool have also been credited with interest in his signature.

Nunez's strike at Anfield took his tally for the season to 32, highlighting why so many big-name clubs are reportedly interested in his signature. The Uruguayan, who will turn 23 in June, has cemented himself as one of the most highly-rated strikers in Europe this season and is valued at £60million.

With 32 goals to his name this term, it is no surprise that clubs such as United are being credited with interest in his services. He is developing at a rapid rate of knots and his stock is only growing, making it easy to understand why Benfica shrugged off interest from West Ham United in January.

But despite continuous speculation concerning his future, Nunez is focused on the task in hand, insisting matters at Benfica remain his top priority.

"What the Liverpool coach [Jurgen Klopp] said, I take it as a compliment, but my mind is on Benfica," Nunez told Portuguese broadcaster TVI. "I won't say anything, and I'll leave everything for this shirt.

"My job is to continue like this, to take advantage of this luck that is happening to me. Last year I didn't play at all, but this year I'm having an incredible season.

"I have to continue like this, and there is also a lot of merit from my colleagues."

Ahead of Wednesday evening's tussle at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp waxed lyrical about Nunez's talents. The striker had scored in the first-leg in Lisbon last week and the German knew only too well that he would pose a threat once again.

Klopp said: "Extremely good-looking boy and a decent player as well. Really good, really good, I have to say.

"I knew him before, of course but he played pretty much in front of me with these tough battles with Ibou Konate.

"Physically strong, quick, was calm with his finish when he finished the goal off. Good, really good. If he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him."
