Famous abandoned Monte Palace hotel - Sete Cidades - Lagoa Azul (Azores - Sao Miguel)

Video (with subtitles) showing the long abandoned former "Hotel Monte Palace" and beautiful surroundings from Vista do Rei over the "Lagoa Azul" and Sete Cidades (with interview of local food truck owner "Frank"). A creepy ghost hotel.
After more than 10 years of planning, financing problems and construction delays, the hotel opened in 1989, only to close litte over a year later.The large five-story complex included two restaurants, a bar, a bank, a hairdresser, and a night club. In 1990, it was voted as one of the best hotels in Portugal and was rated as a five-star venue, the first in the Azores.
Apparently the premises were guarded until 2010 but then left completely abandoned- The continuing state of deterioration over the years can be followed in these videos and articles that also offer more background information:
