Driving the best sand dunes in Southern Africa | Cape Route Rally

Welcome back to the Cape Route Rally, the Desert and Diamonds Dash!

The team embarks on a 2000km journey, searching for the best sand dunes to drive in Southern Africa. The journey starts at Lamberts Bay Dunes and we make our way up north, all the way into Namibia.


Day 1 started with a good warm-up session in Lamberts Bay, getting all the rigs tested and ready for the journey. Ten-plus monster machines roaring through the dunes, sand flying and smiles lighting up the environment. Ant and his Patrol didn't get the memo of keeping it on all 4 wheels, so after a little roly-poly moment, the mechanics had to jump in to make the first repairs of the trip. Everyone was A-ok and after a quick engine check, the Black Panther was back on the road again with a few battle scars to show.

The group made their way up to the Koignas area for day two and more dune driving. This time Petrus had issues, breaking his rack-ends in the dunes, stranding him without steering. After a quick bush fix, they headed to Springbok for further repairs. Saltpan drags were also on the list for this day and this is where the Black Patrol of Ant decided to have 5 neutrals as he shredded his gearbox, so with the Patol out for repairs once more, the rest headed to Port Nolloth for the night.

Day 3 had the team cross into Namibia to enjoy the vast open landscape and gigantic dunes there. Once more, everyone had an absolute blast, showcasing their driving skills with synchronized dune drifting. After the fun it the dunes, they headed back to the accommodation. Day 4, the long drive back home. The team made their way back down to Cape Town, taking a few scenic gravel routes along the way. The journey ended with a final dune section in Atlantis Dunes where the sponsors, friends and family joined to celebrate the end of another successful Cape Route Rally!

It is amazing to see the connection between man and machine and how something as simple as a bit of dune driving can bring so much joy to the group.
