Palmer's management career began when he was appointed player-manager of Stockport County in November 2001. He was sacked by the club in September 2003, following a poor start to the season.

The appointment...

Carlton Palmer is the new manager of Stockport County.

The former England midfielder, who replaces former boss Andy Kilner, has left Sheffield Wednesday to take up his first managerial post. He has agreed to a pay cut to do so.

His former Southampton team-mate Kevin Richardson has been appointed as coach, while Colin Murphy returns to the club as director of football.

Murphy was at Stockport twice before and previously helped the club stave off relegation to the Conference.

County skipper Mike Flynn admitted he and his team-mates were surprised by the appointment of Palmer, who will be taking his first steps into management at Edgeley Park.

"To be fair, the players were a little surprised and I thought we'd go for someone with more experience," he said.

"He has played in the Premiership and has represented his country so I think it's a good move.

"We're stuck at the bottom of the table at the moment, we've put in some good performances against top sides in this division and we've got the players.

"Carlton Palmer was a winner. I'm not sure if he will combine playing with managing, but he is a winner and I'm sure he will instill that into the players."

The appointment of the former Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry player has not led to the departure of caretaker managers Craig Madden and Nigel Deeley.

Madden, a team-mate of Palmer's at West Brom, will remain at the club as reserve team boss while Deeley will continue his work with the youth team.

After the dismissal.......

Former manager Carlton Palmer has been awarded compensation after an industrial tribunal ruled that County had unfairly dismissed the 38-year-old. Palmer was sacked in September 2003 following a very poor start to the season which saw us win just once in our opening eight League matches.

Palmer was handed his P45 by the club following the home defeat by Hartlepool United on 16th September 2003, a defeat which saw County slip into the bottom four of the Second Division. That defeat meant that County had picked up just six points out of a possible twenty-four at the start of the season – a tally which Palmer thought was good enough to have kept him in a job. Despite the fact that Palmer was dismissed as manager in September, Kevin Richardson stayed on as assistant manager to caretaker manager John Hollins although he eventually left the club when Sammy McIlroy was appointed as manager in October.

Palmer and Richardson took the club to an industrial tribunal after claiming unfair dismissal and the club was last week found guilty. The tribunal’s ruling means that County have to pay Palmer a years worth of wages in compensation with Richardson receiving 18 months worth of wages. It is believed that the club will have to shell out a six-figure fee following the ruling, which is inclusive of solicitors fees.
