Join us as we continue north towards Santiago de Compostela. Today we are walking from Apúlia to Esposende in Portugal! It is now late October!
Following the Camino yellow arrows we walked on narrow cobblestone roads, tarmac, one lane dirt roads, and hiking trails. As we walked local people waved and wished us "Bon Camino" or "may your path be good. And we enjoyed during the day the company of so many other new friends from around the world.
Our path took us through the small town of Fáo. We were delighted to walk through the Saturday Farmers Market and buy fresh produce for our snacks. Even more delightful was coming across the 1947 Clarinhas Pastelaria. It was not on our list to visit but we enjoyed our coffee and pastries and decided to stay a while to visit.
We crossed over the metallic bridge from Fäo to Esponsende enjoying the walk over the Cávado River. Esposende sits on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the river. The city has historic roots and was granted by the then King a charter as a village in 1542.
The Hotel Suave Mar, were we stay is located on the waterfront at the opposite end of the city so we were able to walk along the boardwalk and oceanfront portion of the city. Walking through the old city the pride in its medieval roots as a fishing village and settlement for maritime trade is displayed in public art and spaced.
Staff at the Hotel Suave Mar greeted us with a warm welcome. Stepping inside the entrance the historic charm of the hotel is apparent. It is a beautiful older hotel with modern upgrades and amenities. Rooms typically have balconies or verandas with views of the ocean or pool. And the breakfast buffet was one of the best! The hotel's location sitting on the Atlantic Ocean and directly on the Camino path are added perks.
The staff explained the city and pointed us in the direction of a fabulous local food for dinner. The oceanfront restaurant "O Buraco" did not disappoint. Fresh local catch is on display and available for guest to select from and is served with local produce and products.
We stayed one night in Esposende but on our next walk we will take an additional day to rest.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone at "Portugal Green Walks" for their support and expertise in creating a memorable camino and experience of a lifetime.
