I couldn’t explore the seaside resort city of Florianopolis without indulging in its succulent seafood! Come along with me as I sink into Brazilian seafood paradise in the country’s oyster capital, Florianopolis, Brazil!

For this adventure, my friends Guilherme and Rafa from Rio4Fun and Rio4Food took me to Ostradamus, a famous oyster restaurant on La Ruta Gastronomica in the southern part of the island.

This part of the city was like a traditional Portuguese town with lots of colorful homes and buildings. The restaurant is like an open-air pier right on the water. Its exterior looked like a Greek taverna, and inside it was like a fisherman-style restaurant, they had lots of oyster tanks. They even had some turtles!

In the kitchen, they showed me their oysters. They’re all the same species, but different sizes. Some of them are massive! They make a dozen different varieties.

Then, I headed out to the pier to our table. The view was stunning, and every table was separated by a glass partition because of the pandemic. The weather was amazing and the beach was right below us. There was also a nice ambiance with the music! It was perfect!

You can order half a dozen of different types so you can sample their many varieties! We ordered 7 or 8 of several different types of oysters and tried some strong, high-quality cachaça. Then, I headed back to the kitchens to watch them prepare some amazing oysters and some octopus!

Back at our table, I dug into the raw oysters. I had six of them, and it only cost me about $7 USD. I loved eating them with a squeeze of lime.

The flambeed oysters with honey, garlic, ginger, and balsamic vinegar were massive! The flavors were unreal and had my mouth watering. It was my favorite meal I’ve had in Brazil so far!

Next was the octopus, which was creamy and meaty. I’d eaten a dish similar to it in Italy. The caramelized onions added some sweetness, and there was also a creamy glaze on it. It was so succulent and tender. Then, my parmesan oysters arrived!

My dozen parmesan oysters were beautiful! They were baked and loaded with gooey, creamy cheese. I loved the toasted crust on top! Next was an oyster with a dozen types of peppers in it. I also loved the bread with the honey glaze from the flambeed oysters.

Then, they gave me a dozen oysters for free for promoting them. Some of them had cheese on top while the others were topped with balsamic vinegar. The cheesy one with mozzarella and parmesan was insanely delicious, while the balsamic oysters were out of this world!

Next were oysters with pineapple, fig, and brie cheese. It was a flavor and texture explosion that was briny, savory, and sweet! These seven types of oysters plus octopus were unbelievable!

The staff at Ostradamus is incredibly friendly, too. They even gave me a discount!

Then, we drove down the street through the fishing village. We passed by homes, a church and cemetery, and more oyster restaurants. Further along the gastronomic route is a shop called Cantinho da Arte where you can buy handmade wood carvings. They make amazing wall hangings, tables, and more from tree trunks outside!

Their tables looked incredible! If you visit, you can tell them your family name and your family seal if you have one, and they’ll make a wall hanging for you. Or you can take an existing one and have them put your family name on it!

I chose one featuring a suit of armor and a lion and had them put Hoffmann on it. It costs about R$ 80, or about $16 USD total. It would be ready for my by 5 p.m. the next day!
