The bodies of at least nine people trapped in a tunnel submerged by floodwaters in South Korea’s central city of Cheongju were retrieved on July 16, 2023. Days of torrential rain have pounded the country, causing floods and landslides, killing dozens of people and forcing thousands more from their homes. Speaking while on an overseas trip, President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered officials to mobilise all available resources to minimise casualties.
