➤ James Joyce was born in Dublin, Ireland, on February 2, 1882, and is considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Among his best known works are the volume of short stories Dublin People (1914) and the novels Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Ulysses (1922), and Finnegans Wake (1939). His writing included technical innovations such as extensive use of the interior monologue, the development of a network of symbols drawn from mythology, history, and literature, and the creation of a language full of invented words and puns. He died in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1941.
➤ The novel 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' describes Stephen Dedalus' Dublin childhood and his search for identity. The different phases of the protagonist's life, from childhood to university life, are reflected in changes in narrative style. The biographical aspects are treated with ironic detachment, on a journey that culminates with a break with the Church and the discovery of an artistic vocation. The work is also a recognizable self-portrait of James Joyce's youth, as well as a universal tribute to the imagination of artists.
