Relaxing walking tour of Estoril, Portugal, with detailed historical information and context. Estoril is a cosmopolitan town with palm-lined streets, aristocratic mansions, world-class golf, and beaches attracting locals and tourists throughout the year.

Estoril is part of the Cascais municipality, and together they make up the “Portuguese Riviera.” Just over 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Lisbon, it’s where the rich, famous, and even royal Europeans and spies escaped to during World War II, when Portugal remained a safe, neutral country. Grand hotels and Europe's biggest casino were built to welcome them.

Known as a haunt of international spies, and wartime adventurers, Estoril Casino was famous for spying and secret negotiations. That's where author Ian Fleming was inspired to create the James Bond character, in his first book "Casino Royale".
