15 Countries That Are Going Bankrupt Because of COVID | Wealth Professor
Bankruptcy is a legal process through which people or other entities who cannot repay debts to creditors may seek relief from some or all of their debts. In most jurisdictions, bankruptcy is imposed by a court order, often initiated by the debtor. Bankruptcy is a legal status that usually lasts for a year and can be a way to clear debts you can't pay. When you're bankrupt, your non-essential assets and excess income are used to pay off your creditors. At the end of the bankruptcy, most debts are cancelled.
With a handful of prominent companies already buckling under the economic fallout from the coronavirus, new research indicates that bankruptcies are set to rise even higher as debt-laden businesses succumb to the effects of COVID-19. To estimate the upcoming increase in financial distress, the researchers tracked the U.S. unemployment rate and the frequency of businesses going bankrupt from 1980 to the first quarter of 2020. The researchers also forecast bond ratings downgrades and defaults and examined the impact of reduced revenues and profits on corporate balance sheets.
