It's no secret that PSG have the absolute hegemony in Ligue 1. Over the past nine seasons, the Parisians have failed to win the league title only twice: last season they lost it to Lille and in the 2016/17 season they were outrun by the heroes of our video, Monaco.
That squad, under Leonardo Jardim’s management, went through Ligue 1 like a hurricane, winning 30 out of 38 matches. The Monegasques drew five matches and lost only three. They scored 107 goals in the league - that's almost three goals per match on average! Just wow!
The team reached the Champions League semi finals, where in the round of 16 they had an awesome confrontation with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, which ended with a aggregate score of 6:6. Monaco advanced thanks to the away goals rule, but what amazing games those were!
Then the Monegasques removed Borussia Dortmund from their path and lost only to Juventus in the semifinals. This was the season during which Kylian Mbappe's star came to life. But other young players of that line-up also made their way to the top clubs in Europe. Let's talk about everyone in order.
Benjamin Mendy
The French left-back joined the team right before the season and made such a name for himself within a year that he moved to Manchester City the following summer. The Monegasques signed Mendy from Marseille for 13 million euros, and a year later re-sold him to England for 50. Brilliant player progress and excellent business from the club. We will be admiring the sales of Monaco more than once.
Mendy's career at Man City has hardly been successful. Yes, he’s had great streaks, he’s won some trophies, but much of that was canceled out by a huge number of injuries and discipline problems. And now the player is in prison, as an investigation is underway on suspicion of sexual harassment on his behalf. Of course, he was suspended from the team.
Djibril Sidibé
A very similar beginning of the story, but the continuation is not as bright. Like Benjamin, Djibril came to the club in the summer of 2016 and had an outstanding season. Statistically, Sidibe and Mendy did not differ much. However, Monaco kept the player and eventually his career went downhill. So Djibril only went on a failed loan to Everton for one season, and continues to play for the Monegasques.
On the other hand, unlike his colleague, Sidibe has not been a part of scandals.
Fabinho
And here’s a guy who had a really phenomenal season! It's Fabinho. A true leader in the midfield, he played in almost every possible match and additionally was a regular penalty taker at Monaco.
The key to such progress was that the Brazilian was finally moved to the midfield, as before that he was used primarily as a right defender. The 2016/17 season was the 4th with the Monegasques for Fabinho. Unlike many young stars of the club, he spent another season in the team and moved to Liverpool for 45 million euros in the summer of 2018. Since then, he has won the Premier League, the Champions League and has become one of the best defenders in all of Europe with the Merseysiders.
Kylian Mbappe
And of course, we can’t go without the great and powerful Kylian Mbappe. The 2016/17 season was a breakthrough for Monaco, and 17-year-old Kylian was the epitome of that! This was the young Frenchman's first season as a starter. And he spent it in such a way that people started talking about him as one of the future Ballon d’Or winners. PSG could not get a hold of themselves and paid Monaco 180 million euros for him.
Of course, if a 17-year-old kid scores 26 goals in a season, it’s hard not to see how great a future opens up for him.
The rest is history. But Kylian is only 22 and there is still so much excitement ahead of him. Drop us a like if you believe that Mbappe will be able to win his first Ballon d'Or within the next 2-3 years!
