Rádium hot springs from miracle to ruin.
The story of one of the most fascinating abandoned places in Portugal.
It's not a castle but it looks like that from a distance. It is an old thermal complex with abandoned hotels.
Rádium hot springs has been around for over a century. There are five blocks, all made of granite and with windows and columns.
It had a rise as fast as its decline. The reason is the radio and the waters of some nearby mines. At the beginning of the 20th century, the radium waters were miraculous and visitors quickly appeared. There is a legend that a Spaniard, Count Rodrigo, ordered the construction of the spa after his daughter was cured with water from the mines. The success was so great that they even sold bottled water abroad: “Radium water – gives health, vigor and strength”.
The company that operated the spa was English and some of the exports went to London. Águas Rádium gained fame until the Second World War. The news about the devastating effects of radioactivity and advances in Science were dramatic for the spa and then for the hotel.

Não é um castelo mas assim parece ao longe. É um antigo complexo termal com hotel abandonados.
As Termas Rádium têm mais de um século de existência. São cinco blocos, todos de granito e com janelas e colunas.
Teve uma ascensão tão rápida como a decadência. O motivo é o rádio e as águas de umas minas que estão próximas. No início do século XX, as águas com rádio eram miraculosas e rapidamente surgiram visitantes. Há uma lenda que um espanhol, conde Rodrigo, terá mandado construir as termas depois da cura da filha com água das minas. O sucesso foi tão grande que até venderam no estrangeiro água engarrafada: “Água Radium – dá saúde, vigor e força”.
A empresa que explorava as termas era inglesa e alguma da exportação foi para Londres. Ganharam fama as Águas Rádium até à Segunda Grande Guerra. As notícias sobre os efeitos devastadores da radioatividade e os avanços da Ciência foram dramáticos para as termas e de seguida para o hotel.
