Misarela bridge, or Devil bridge, is located in the parish of Ferral, municipality of Montalegre. This construction erected on the Rabagão River is the birthplace of two of Portugal's most unusual legends.
It is believed that it was built by the Devil himself.
In ancient times, a Douro nobleman (or was he a terrible criminal?) fled soullessly from his persecutors. Haunted by the imminent capture, the man ventured towards Rabagão which, at that time, was running stormily. Unable to pass the current, he asked in vain for divine intervention. He then remembered to invoke the power of the Devil, promising him, if he helped him escape, his soul. At that moment the Devil appears and acquiesces to his request by extending a bridge in front of him. So the man fled, who lived in this region for many years. At death's door, with his soul about to be handed over to the Devil, the man reveals his pact to a priest, who absolves him of all sins.
Moved by faith, the priest goes, disguised as a farmer and under cover of night, to the place where the Devil had extended the bridge. There he invokes Satan, promising him his soul in exchange for the ticket. The bridge appears as if by magic in front of him and the priest, as he crosses it, blesses it with holy water, dipped in a sprig of heather (or is it rosemary?) while reciting an exorcism. The black figure of Satan, covered by a thick cloud of sulfur, disappears as if by magic, leaving a strong smell of pitch and incense in the air but... the bridge remains standing, firm and beautiful, connecting the two banks.

A Ponte da Misarela, ou Ponte do Diabo situa-se na freguesia de Ferral, concelho de Montalegre. Esta construção erigida sobre o Rio Rabagão é berço de duas das mais inusitadas lendas de Portugal.
Crê-se que foi construída pelo próprio Diabo.
Em tempos remotos um fidalgo duriense (ou seria um criminoso terrível?) fugia desalmadamente aos seus perseguidores. Acossado pela captura iminente, o homem aventurou-se para os lados do Rabagão que, nessa altura, corria tempestuoso. Na impossibilidade de passar a corrente pediu em vão a intervenção divina. Lembrou-se então de invocar o poder do Diabo prometendo-lhe, caso o auxiliasse na fuga, a sua alma. Nesse momento surge-lhe o Diabo que aquiesce ao seu pedido estendendo à sua frente uma ponte. Assim fugiu o homem, que nesta região viveu muitos anos. Às portas da morte, com a alma prestes a ser entregue ao Diabo, o homem revela o seu pacto a um padre, que o absolve de todos os pecados.
Movido pela fé, o padre desloca-se, disfarçado de lavrador e a coberto da noite, ao local onde o Diabo havia estendido a ponte. Aí invoca Satanás prometendo-lhe a alma em troca da passagem. A ponte surge como por magia à sua frente e o padre ao atravessá-la benze-a com água benta, molhada num raminho de urze (ou será alecrim?) ao mesmo tempo que recita um exorcismo. O vulto negro de Satanás, encoberto por uma espessa nuvem de enxofre desaparece como por encanto, deixando no ar um forte cheiro a pez e incenso mas… a ponte fica de pé, firme e bela, ligando as duas margens.
