Located on the steep slopes of a hill, the village of Monsanto is a fascinating place with an authentic and tranquil environment where we feel transported to a very ancient time.
This place registers the human presence from the Paleolithic, with archaeological vestiges of a Lusitanian castro and of the Roman occupation in the denominated field of S. Lourenço, in the foothills of the mount. Vestiges of the Visigothic and Arab permanence were also found.
The imposing castle built by the Templars was partially destroyed in the 19th century by the accidental explosion of the ammunition bunker.
