27 unaccompanied minors who were among migrants stranded at a rescue ship in the Mediterranean for more than two weeks were seen disembarking at the port of Lampedusa on Saturday. The operation was authorised by Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini.
Footage shows young migrants leaving an Italian border patrol boat before being driven away with local residents applauding and cheering the motorcade.
Salvini said he only allowed the minors to leave the Proactiva Open Arms ship after an intervention by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. The remaining 106 adults and two accompanied minors who are still on the vessel have not been allowed to leave.
