The Cape Espichel Lighthouse
For many centuries, the Portuguese coast was known by foreign ships, especially the British, as the “black coast”, as there was no lighting system to aid navigation. At the end of the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal had a network of lighthouses built to make it safer, including the one at Cabo Espichel, one of the oldest in Portugal, built in 1790.

Espichel Sanctuary cape, inserted in the Arrábida Natural Park, also known as Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua Sanctuary, is located in Cabo Espichel, west of the village of Sesimbra, which marks the southwest end of the Setúbal peninsula and from where glimpses the vertiginous and abyssal Baía dos Lagosteiros.
The sanctuary brings together the church built between 1701-1707 in ground style, two wings of inns built between 1745-1760, the water house dating from 1770 and supplied by an aqueduct and the opera house, from the late 19th century. The two rows of dwellings for the pilgrims create two lines that lead to the church, accentuating the temple's scenography, while at the same time highlighting a game of spans, full and empty and chiaroscuro through the arches and windows on the upper floor, in saloia architecture, but of great interest.

Durante muitos séculos, a costa portuguesa foi conhecida pelos navios estrangeiros, sobretudo os ingleses, como a “costa negra”, pois não existia qualquer sistema de iluminação que ajudasse à navegação. No final do século XVIII, o Marquês de Pombal mandou construir uma rede de faróis que a tornassem mais segura, entre os quais o do Cabo Espichel, um dos mais antigos de Portugal, construído em 1790.

O Santuário do Cabo Espichel, inserido no parque natural da Arrábida, também conhecido como Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua, situa-se no Cabo Espichel, a oeste da vila de Sesimbra que marca a extremidade sudoeste da península de Setúbal e de onde se vislumbra a vertiginosa e abissal Baía dos Lagosteiros.
O santuário congrega a igreja construída entre 1701-1707 em estilo chão, duas alas de hospedarias edificadas entre 1745-1760, a casa da água datada de 1770 e abastecida por um aqueduto e a casa da ópera, de finais de oitocentos. As duas fiadas de habitações para os romeiros criam duas linhas que conduzem à igreja, acentuando a cenografia do templo, ao mesmo tempo que realçam um jogo de vãos, de cheios e vazios e de claro-escuro através da arcaria e janelas do andar superior, numa arquitetura saloia, mas de grande interesse.
