Broken and Stuck, Blocking the Ferry

We’re broken and stuck and we're blocking the ferry. And the ferry isn’t slowing down. The harbor on Faial in the Azores is advertised as the busiest small port in the world. It’s a bold claim and we’re not sure we’re buying it, but it is busy all the same. Boats are rafted four deep at the dock and anchored everywhere. But we found out fast that where we anchored is right in the path of the ferry. Horta, the port city, is a must stop for boats making the Atlantic Crossing from west to east. Most boats stop here for previsions or repairs. Our boat needs both. But first we need to get our anchor off the bottom before we get run over by the ferry that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The windlass seems to be the problem. It put the anchor down fine but now won’t pick it up. It seems that either the chain is stuck or that the electrical foot peddle switch is damaged. Captain Frank apparently has experience with this because he quickly pulled apart the switch and cut the insulating material off both wires and instructed Monica to hold the bare wires together. Is that safe? We’ll find out soon enough because the alternative is getting run over by the fast-approaching ferry. Yikes!

In this episode we’ll also buy a new dinghy and dinghy motor to replace the dingy that was lost at sea between Bermuda and the Azores, and we’ll experience more boat alarms on Rosa del Mar. She is leaking through most windows and hatches, that we already know. But with the amount of water in her bilges, she must be taking on water somewhere else. But where is it coming from and how do we stop it?
